Planning

Both the Upper & Lower Medway IDB’s are consultees on water and flood related planning applications within its drainage district. This should not be confused with the main statutory consultees like Kent County Council or the Environment Agency where the local planning authorities have to take their advice and recommendations seriously. The IDB’s have generally more local knowledge on particular ditches, streams, watercourses and general drainage of the area so many local authorities rely heavily on the IDB’s opinion.

In many instances a new development will be discharging into or affecting IDB adopted watercourses so it’s important the Boards comments are made and sometimes to remind developers that the IDB’s Land Drainage Consent will be required.
